AAC Evidence Base Research Project: October 2010 Update

There was a project launch at the CM2010 National Symposium in September, during which the Big Lottery Fund grant cheque was presented to Communication Matters – photo from left: Toby Hewson (Trustee), Dave Morgan (Research Lead), Mike Clarke (Trustee & Chair of Research Sub-group), Katie Holmes (Research Manager).

There were also a talk and a discussion session about the project during the Symposium. In the discussion session the audience was particularly interested in the proposed map of UK service provision for people who need AAC. If you would like more information about the talk and discussion please contact Katie Holmes (email details below).

The University of Sheffield has appointed two Research Assistants who are due to start work pm the project later this year. Manchester Metropolitan University has advertised for a Research Assistant to join the project – now closed to further applications (for interest, the job details are at communicationmatters.org.uk/news/2010-job-vacancy-mmu/).

Thank you to everyone who has expressed an interest in participating in the research. If you are a person who uses AAC, a family member, carer or practitioner, and you are interested in taking part in the project, then please contact Katie Holmes at [email protected]

The AAC Evidence Base research project is a three-year project funded by the National Lottery through Big Lottery Fund. Communication Matters is leading the project and working with three research partners: University of Sheffield, Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Manchester Metropolitan University.  The project aims to improve the quality of life of people with severe communication impairments who need AAC by raising awareness of their needs and by improving service provision.
