Summary
This paper aims to evaluate existing communication partner training packages available for healthcare assistants working with young people with complex communication needs. This paper forms part of a PhD project to develop a communication training package in collaboration with the communication partners of young people with complex communication needs.
Method/Activities/Techniques
The PRISMA statement and checklist will be adopted to conduct a systematic review of current research in this area.
Results/Findings
The results expect to highlight a significant gap in communication training packages currently available for healthcare assistants working with young people with complex communication needs. It is expected that existing communication training packages will include: the use of observation scales, video feedback, intensive interaction techniques and multi-media profiling.
Conclusions
The need for developing communication training packages for healthcare assistants as a foundation block for AAC will be discussed in the context of current policy and special education.
