Communication Matters’ own research projects are outlined on this page.
For our research policy and information for researchers, see the section on our Research Policy. You can find information about AAC research in the UK here.

Research is a process of gathering information and analysing it to increase our understanding of a topic or problem. Research can establish facts, solve problems or develop new theories. Findings from research into AAC could help the Government, the NHS and local authorities to understand better what services are needed. Research evidence can help practitioners to improve services and support for AAC users to communicate.

AAC Evidence Base Research

Our ground-breaking project collated fundamental information about the need for, and provision of, AAC that could be used to improve services across the UK.

The AACknowledge online AAC evidence base presented information in a variety of accessible formats to help professionals to improve their services and empower individuals to say what they need. This site has been archived since April 2018 and is no longer up to date, but much of its key content can now be found on the Communication Matters website.

Communication Matters has established a Research Involvement Network to promote the involvement of AAC users in research. As part of the project, one of our collaborative partners – Manchester Metropolitan University – developed a single case study template to support the collection of consistent and relevant case data. Follow the links below for more information.

Research Policy

Promoting Research

We are committed to advancing research in the AAC field. We particularly support research that:

  • promotes understanding of the need for provision of AAC and ongoing support services
  • improves the quality of life for individuals and groups of individuals by understanding their needs
  • influences local and national policy and practice, leading to better services and interventions for AAC users
  • promotes community learning and creates opportunities for AAC users and their families

Collaboration

We sometimes undertake research independently, but we also collaborate with universities and the wider research community. We welcome approaches from research establishments, individual researchers and private companies that seek to work collaboratively on a study. This may range from asking for guidance on approach to the AAC population, active collaboration or dissemination only.

Our Board of Trustees has oversight on approaches for collaboration. Researchers wishing to collaborate with Communication Matters should email [email protected].
