In this session we will present a model for a class structure that we employ in a secondary special needs school that accommodates the needs of students with communication difficulties. We will demonstrate how we use story, drama, and music linked to AAC to help promote and develop the communication skills of secondary age students with severe learning difficulties.
The session will include an outline of the reasoning behind, and structure of our Access Class. We will present our ‘communication ethos’, and methods of target setting and recording. We will demonstrate how we use story, music, and drama to promote communication by engineering the environment.
The presentation will be supported by PowerPoint and video clips. We will show examples of communication aids used to support lessons. The aim is to show a teaching and classroom structure that we have found successful for many of our students, and to promote discussion.
