This presentation describes how Sandwell speech and language therapists are using symbol supported text to improve language, communication and literacy skills in school students. Narrative skills and literacy are developed using sequence cards, story telling and recalling events. This can be further developed using computer software (e.g. SymWriter, Clicker) into independent writing and communication.
The method is appropriate for students functioning from P5/6 levels upwards in school. Each stage of the learning process and the reasoning behind the approach will be explained using PowerPoint and video.
