1. UEA SLT Society are Fundraising for Communication Matters

From Lucie Aldrich, University of East Anglia (UEA):

I am a Speech and Language Therapy student at UEA, and I am also the ‘Giving Voice’ representative for the SLT Society. Every year we have a ‘Giving Voice’ week, which is based around spreading awareness of our profession and the people we work with, including people with language, communication, and swallowing disorders.

Every year we run activities within the week to raise money for a chosen charity and this year we are fundraising for Communication Matters, as we believe strongly in your message and would like to help channel that message to others. Our ‘Giving Voice’ week is this week (from 21st November) and we have had multiple activities throughout the week to help raise money and spread awareness, such as a bake sale, a sport event, and a sponsored silence, just to name a few!

Please visit our JustGiving page and help us raise as much as possible for Communication Matters!

2. CALL Scotland Online Learning Workshop

Claire Harrison, CALL Scotland

Participants will learn about the development and progression of early mathematical skills and concepts and consider how these relate to children and young people with complex additional support needs.

This online workshop will give participants the opportunity to engage with the research and explore practical ideas and tools for putting it into practice. We will explore creative ways of adapting and innovating in order to make learning materials more accessible including ideas for using iPad apps, Software and ‘No tech’ practical materials as well as switch and eye gaze accessible resources. We will also highlight useful resources, information and websites.

5. Could you be the next Treasurer of Communication Matters?

We are looking for people with skills in finance to become our next Treasurer of Communication Matters! This person would ideally have a background in finance but doesn’t necessarily need to know about AAC. Typically, the Treasurer’s duties include managing and overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation, as well as budgets and reports, but we promise there are fun jobs too!

If you love a good spreadsheet or know someone who does then please get in touch. Being a Trustee requires stamina, commitment, and skill mixing, but it is also very stimulating, enjoyable, and rewarding.

Neil Hansen has returned as co-opted Treasurer in the interim until we can find someone to take on the role longer term. A typical Trustee term is for three years. Volunteers sought – please contact us on admin@communicationmatters.org.uk for more details.
