Life through the Eyes and Mouth of Barry Smith

Personal experience
  • Barry Smith

My name is Barry Smith and I am 29 years old, I have a physical disability called Cerebral Palsy.  People might wonder how I feel about CP, it is only a part of who I am. I need some support in my life, it gives people a job and they get to know me as a person. My Lightwriter helps them understand what I am saying.

Most people I know who speak with a communication aid do not have a job, because of their Physical Disability, also the need for support workers to help them do the things they cant. I live by myself in my own house. I get Supper workers in for things I cannot do for myself. I am doing a computer course in Scotland were I live.

I would like to say something to everyone about communication aids. We need to make people more aware about communication aids because they are sometimes the only way disabled people can speak out. My personal feeling is that everyone should be made aware how to talk to people with an AAC and to understand we take time
