We will discuss how to extend Boardmaker resources using the Widgit Literacy Symbols (WLS) which have been developed to support literacy and learning and provide a structure for reading and writing activities. We will also show additions to the WLS set created in collaboration with teachers in The Symbols Inclusion Project, Speech and Language Therapists, professionals working in Adult Services, and parents of children with SEN.
We will also demonstrate how to support emerging, struggling, or non-readers familiar with Picture Communicate Symbols (PCS) in creating stories, reports and more using Communicate: SymWriter (CSW). We will show how this simple word and symbol processor, with features such as ‘smart symbolising’ and onscreen writing environments, can engage all learners in the writing process. We will also highlight how the program adds grammatical elements and markers to PCS to support the symbol set being used in a literacy context.
