Summary

Any form of transition for a person experiencing profound & multiple learning difficulties can be a bewildering time. How are they to make sense of where they are going or where they are? How can we best assist understanding and ease  stress? This session will explain and differentiate between the use of two, often confused, techniques that can help: ‘Sensory Cueing’ and ‘Objects Of Reference’ (OOR).

Both techniques will be explored with simple practical examples such that participants may be better able to implement best practice. Sensory Cueing is a technique which develops afferent cognisance of spatial locations and associated experiences in order to build an awareness and anticipation in those who might otherwise be confused spatiallly and temporally. OOR addresses the questions “Where am I going?” and “What am I doing next?” with similar techniques.
