Summary

Given the current economic climate and the need to show evidence based decision-making, cost effective alternative and augmentative communication options need to be considered. These can range from temporary or assessment devices to long term solutions, taking into account the individual user’s needs and requirements.

This paper will explore the options available using mainstream technologies combined with low cost and freeware software, as well as alternative access possibilities. It will discuss the availability of other functions, such as Internet and environmental control, and will look at the possible advantages and disadvantages of such solutions, and future directions.
