LITERAAC: Shared reading and AAC

Session
4.3

Summary

LITERAAC was born following ACIP’s 2005 study day “Successful literacy for children with severe communication difficulties” presented by Karen Erickson. The focus was on how shared reading, which Karen promoted during the study day, could be incorporated into a mainstream school setting to support emerging literacy and build opportunities for communication for the child using a dynamic display communication aid, whilst offering the teaching staff on-site, practical training.

During our session, we will read one of the books chosen, Not Now Bernard by David McKee, and look at how we made it accessible for our children, the outcomes we found for the children, the adult and the school, and following LITERAAC the next steps we took in building communication into active learning within the mainstream classroom.
