An Introduction to Two Pieces of Recent Postgraduate Research in the use of Graphic Symbols

Session

Research
  • Eliada Pampoulou
  • Louise Greenstock
Summary

This presentation will introduce research into the use of graphic symbols.

Eliada researched the selection of symbol sets by speech and language therapists. The findings suggested that therapists take into consideration factors such as user's needs and skills, symbol set characteristics, and environment.  Therapists reported difficulties in selecting the optimum symbol set.

Louise researched the use of graphic symbols in schools by teachers, teaching assistants, and SLTs. The findings suggest that practitioners face a number of decisions when using symbols with a range of children in schools and that perceptions of their own professional role and those of others’ influence their practice.

We will present the rationale, research design, and an overview of findings, as well as implications and future directions in research.
