Summary

KEYCOMM identified a need for comprehensive AAC training for teachers supporting children using AAC within special schools in the Lothian Region. Our objective was to empower teachers with the confidence and knowledge to play a key role in developing, adapting and integrating the learners' AAC systems into daily routines, classroom activities and other school activities, and also give the teachers a recognition in this area from the General Teaching Council Scotland.

Fourteen teachers signed up for the six session course, from a range of special schools within the primary and secondary sectors. The course was a combination of lectures, course and school-based tasks, case study presentation and written assignment. In this presentation we will outline the course content, including tasks and participant reflections, course materials and reading list. We will also describe the changes observed within the classrooms following on from the course, and the support KEYCOMM provided to ensure that practices could be implemented.
