Summary

This session will present the successful inclusion into a mainstream secondary school of an AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) user who has complex physical and communication needs. The session will describe:

  1. Development and content of the statement, the choice of school and parental input into the team structure, preparation for transition, training and handover.
  2. How assistive technology and high- and low-tech AAC is used for both learning and communication.
  3. Issues our student faces around socialising and the steps we are taking to ensure that he is supported to build up a friendship network.
  4. Challenges that test us and which we are still at work on (there will be some audience participation to unpick how the challenges can be overcome).
