Summary

Controversy has surrounded whether individuals with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD) can benefit from high-tech voice output communication aids. This presentation will use a series of case studies to illustrate and attempt to pinpoint exactly how individuals with ASD are functionally using their systems. The framework of Janice Light's four AAC competencies (operational, linguistic, social, strategic) will be employed to highlight how the systems are used by the individuals in the case studies. A comparison with their use of low-tech systems will be made, to demonstrate any effect of using the high-tech systems.
