Summary

This seminar will report some findings from an intervention study, using a single case study methodology. The intervention took place over a 12 month period. The aim of the investigation was to explore the inner language skills of an adult with a lifelong reliance on multi-modal communication strategies. Intervention explored a number of topics around 'thinking about language' including: word order and message sequences, word access and concept associations, sound-letter matching and awareness, word construction and spelling.

The initial findings suggest that intervention effected a change in the adult's organisation skills and ways of thinking about language, with an increase in literacy skill. Implications for service provision will be considered.
