Summary

AAC? CM? PCS? PECS? ISAAC? VOCA?

Confused yet? We aim to give a Survival Guide relevant to those who have not been to the Communication Matters (CM) National Symposium before, and those who want an overview of the augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) field. You will come away ready to make the most out of your two days, whatever background you come from.

We will describe, in plain language, the full range of AAC from 'no-tech' to 'high-tech' and highlight some of the main features that distinguish one system from another. Every field has it's jargon, so we will explain some of the technical terms and common acronyms and give you an essential "Acronym Buster". We will also give an overview of how the conference works, who's who and where to go for help. We will introduce CM as a charity: its background, role and member benefits. Finally, we will take a look at the conference program, highlight some of the themes and decode some of the abstracts to help you plan which sessions to attend.
