A new technique has been developed which automatically generates structured personalised conversational utterances for use in social encounters. The technology has been incorporated into a working prototype system and has undergone testing and evaluation with a small but diverse AAC user group in real conversational encounters. Results have been very encouraging; we have observed increased rates of communication, reduced levels of passivity in the users, and improved ratings of mutual enjoyment of conversations facilitated by the system.

The design of the technology is presented, along with examples of how the system is personalised and how utterances are generated. We present our evaluation methodology and provide details of our formal system trials. Results are then presented along with a discussion of the potential future application and development of the technology.
