AAC: Is it just about speaking?

Session

Summary

The focus of AAC is to aid a person’s communication. We often focus on face to face communication but modern hi-tech communication aids offer great potential for access to other mainstream forms of communication such as text messaging, email, social networking, etc., and our society as a whole has become very keen on these methods of communication.

Recent work with a student at a school in Barnsley has illustrated how important these functions can be and the added independence they can give. This case study will discuss the applications this student is using and her views about them and why they are important to her. In addition there will be discussion about some of the considerations to be made when looking at these other functions.
