If we are to provide the right services that people with learning disabilities need and want, then we need to listen to what they have to say and help show them how they can be more involved in making decisions and choices. Service user involvement is therefore key to all we do and Communication Matters supported our idea of holding a conference to demonstrate inclusive communication at various levels of engagement.
Our main audience was service users with learning disabilities and communication difficulties, supported by carers, with some targeted invitations to others.
The conference mainly consisted of four interactive workshops with different themes relating to user involvement. Videoing undertaken throughout the day will enable a DVD to be developed for those present and for a wider audience to share the experiences. An inclusive communication approach was utilised throughout the day and service users reported being truly ‘involved’.
