Summary

For many people who are non-verbal or have speech impairments, their greatest barrier is often the telephone. It was therefore only a matter of time before someone combined a communication aid and mobile phone, which is seen with Toby Churchill’s SL40 Connect Lightwriter.

This presentation (from the perspective of a user and independent disability consultant) not only explores the technical complications of combining AAC with mobile telephony, but also examines the physiological and sociological impact of such a device within an era of greater social inclusion, enablement and empowerment for current and potential adult AAC users.
