Summary

An action research project brought 5 children with minimal communication skills, and intellectual disability, from different classes in a special school, to work together in a communication group. The aim was to evaluate the effectiveness of group work with children who would not usually be thought ready to participate in this setting. The children selected were those who had been previously working individually on increasing the amount they pointed for communication purposes.

The weekly group used a variety of methods to stimulate engagement and response including watching video of children’s news clips and playing simplified versions of television game shows such as ‘Countdown’. Weekly notes of the pupils’ participation and regular videos of sessions formed the research data. All the children involved made changes in their level of participation and in their ability to select choices from a small set of possibilities.
