Summary

This presentation will address the following aspects of a participation model of a home-school service:

  • Offering support to parents, carers and the extended family to increase participation and input into a child's AAC.
  • The role of an AAC home-school coordinator to promote liaison, training in AAC strategies, and programming and designing specific equipment to meet the needs of the individual.
  • Engagement of an extended social network to aid the breaking down of barriers to integrating children with severe communication needs into the wider community.
  • Importance of highlighting different AAC needs in community vs educational setting.

The presentation will include case studies on relative successes and the challenges facing the service.
