Summary

Communicaton and Learning Enterpises (CandLE) have developed an AAC self assessment tool-kit for schools with the help of the Department for Education "Innovative Grants" programme,  five Cumbrian special schools, one mainstream school and Helen Dixon from Cumbria PCT. We have identified priorities for schools to consider when they develop their use of AAC within the curriulum as well as for communication. We have created a pro forma approach for observing the use of AAC in the classroom and for identifying pupils who may benefit from AAC assessment. Through piloting these pro formas within the classroom during the development of the tool-kit we were also able to begin to develop some evidence base for practice.

This session will introduce the tool-kit, share the preliminary findings regarding the use of AAC in the classroom and propose the development of the tool-kit into a national project.
