Summary

This presentation describes findings from a research project on the range of communication strategies people use to respond to a semi-structured interview protocol and picture description activity.

It will consider the range of idiosyncratic characteristics of communication used by participants using a wide range of hi-tech communication devices.

It also offers some thoughts on factors to consider when choosing a new communication device or when thinking about ways to enhance communication rate or clarity. Some of the challenges to on-going effective use of a VOCA will also be considered.

This study was supported by the AAC Institute, USA.
