Summary

A communication group has been running since Christmas at Greenacre School, Barnsley, with their high-tech communication aid users.

One of the main drives for this was a Greenacre student who was keen to meet other teenagers using communication aids. This student had attended one of the Communication Mornings held termly in South Yorkshire and had reported that they had found the activities too ‘childish’ for them. This has led to one of the challenges for the organisers of the group being to look at finding activities which encourage development of communicative competence but which are motivating and enjoyable for the teenagers in the group.

The aim of the presentation is to share the experience of setting up and running these activities and to discuss how they were received by the students.
