Starting Blocks: Resources for integrating linguistic, social, and operational competences

Session
6.2
Educational
  • Sally Conner
Summary

This session will demonstrate an extensive resource for developing operational, social, and linguistic competences concurrently, in small steps and through play. The resource has been developed in Grid 2, and is available from Sensory Software International Ltd.

Accessing skills are facilitated in an interpersonal (rather than screen-focused) context. Partner skills are also facilitated, and workbooks assist with target setting and evaluation.

The audience will both see and participate in:

  • On Your Marks: consisting of turn-taking and choice-making activities
  • Get Set: consisting of categorisation, navigation, and gradual transition from simple to row/column scanning
  • Go!: communication grids which introduce operational targets (e.g. page navigation) incrementally.

Case presentation and audience participation will emphasise that this is learning through fun.
