Social Networks: Improving practice and outcomes for persons with complex communication needs

Summary

This workshop will focus on the use of a practical measurement tool for guiding the assessment and intervention process.

Social Networks: A Communication Inventory for Individuals with Complex Communication Needs and their Communication Partners (SN) offers a way to gather important information from family members, professionals and individuals with complex communication needs (Blackstone & Hunt Berg, 2003).

Based on the recognition that a person’s quality of life presupposes extensive positive interactions within the individual’s social milieu (Goldstein, 2002), SNs support the decision-making process in ways that increase the success of communication outcomes for children and adults who have complex communication needs, no matter what type of disability they might have.
