More Than Making Resources: Introducing and equipping communication partners to support communication with symbols

Session

Personal experience
  • Nick Trapnell
Summary

This presentation will describe the author’s experience piloting and running workshops for:

  • families with children and young people who are starting to use symbols to support communication
  • professionals who are introducing symbols to an individual or who are themselves new to an environment where symbols are already being used.

The workshops were piloted in 2006 and have now become part of a rolling programme offered to parents and professionals in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The workshops offer participants opportunities to: try communicating with symbols; design and create symbol resources; plan how to introduce and support symbols in the home or school environment; and consider resources to support pupils in the classroom. These workshops are offered to professionals who had already attended a Software Workshop.
