Summary

To tell people how I am raising awareness of AAC through my involvement with South Devon police, and how I am training them to help people who have learning disabilities.

Method/Activities/Techniques

I will present to the audience, using my communication aid, to narrate my involvement with the hate and mate crime training project. I will use power point and video clips as visual aids.

Results/Findings

I have been doing presentations for many years, but usually to groups that use or know about AAC. This was very different because most of the people I have met, both on the project, and on my training course, have never met someone who uses a device to talk. Nor have most of the police people been trained by an AAC user. Therefore my involvement is raising awareness of AAC and how I use it to communicate.

Conclusions

Making huge changes within the police force and the way they treat and deal with those with a learning disability. Also raising awareness of AAC across Devon, to a profession that probably have little to do with people that use it.
