Summary

To provide an overview of Lancasterian School's involvement in the national BBC School News Report Day in March 2013. To share experiences of using a range of AAC/Assistive Technology resources to support spoken and written communication to develop news stories.

Method/Activities/Techniques

This presentation will explore the process involved in creating news stories through collaboration with the BBC. Lancasterian School joined the project this year as part of its existing Newsround and Pupils' Press sessions.

Results/Findings

Pupils continued to develop their social communication skills within their Newsround and Pupils' Press therapy sessions, with the added benefit of working with BBC journalists. They enjoyed meeting real journalists and sharing their ideas on creating news reports. The pupils' access to the BBC media resources made the experience more meaningful.

Conclusions

Pupil involvement in the BBC School News Report Day provided an opportunity for pupils to continue to develop their use of AAC strategies for social communication and written communication, and to extend their work to a wider audience. It provided a great opportunity to showcase the work we are already doing in school and promote the needs of our AAC/Assistive Technology users.
