Summary

There has been considerable discussion within the AAC community in regard to AAC users accessing GCSEs. Experience of reasonable adjustments on the part of exam boards varies considerably. This session aims to use personal experience to provide guidance to families and professionals who would like to support students to access GCSEs.

Method/Activities/Techniques

An application was sucessfully made to a number of exam boards in respect of one AAC users access to GCSEs.

Results/Findings

The AAC user was given 400% extra time, agreement that GCSEs could be adapted using grid based technology, and a number of other considerations. The development of normal ways of working in test situations was crucial to the outcome.

Conclusions

That successful applications to exam boards for reasonable adjusments require a specific approach and a thorough understanding of the guidance documents. The development of normal ways of working in test situations is essential to the process.
