This paper aims to describe the 'Virtual Communication Partner' software, the results of the intial pilot project, and the future plans for the software.
Participants were asked to use the Virtual Communciation Partner software for a period of six weeks whilst they were trialing a communication aid recommended by Frenchay Communication Aid Centre. The software played video clips which the participants were required to respond to, to emulate a conversation. The computer captured data relating to their responses.
The results of this project have not been collected as yet, but will have been collated and analysed by September. The data of this project will be in the form of:
- Usage data: how frequently the software was used during the loan.
- Linguistic data: mean length utterance of responses, and time taken to create responses.
- Arising themes emerging from the semi structured interviews which will take place.
The formal findings of the project are currently being analysed: the software has been shown to a number of speech and language therapists and the feedback to date has been very positive.
