Summary

To present data from my research project with young people aged 14-25 who use AAC, looking at their experiences of using the internet and online social media.

Method/Activities/Techniques

A qualitative research methodology was used to collect data through semi-structured face-to-face interviews, email interviews, a focus group and observations with young people aged 14-25 who use AAC. The participants were either in mainstream or special educational settings or had recently transitioned into the adult community.

Results/Findings

At the time of writing, data is in the process of being collected but preliminary findings have indicated supports and challenges for accessiblity and a positive interest in using the internet and online social media as it is perceived to support communication, friendships, interests, hobbies and independence.

Conclusions

The data at the time of writing is being analysed but initial impressions are that using the internet and online social media is valued by the young people in this study and they are keen to be supported in overcoming accessibility challenges.
