In November 2011 the MND association commissioned a review of the Communication Aid Service which it had been providing. This paper aims to share the outcomes of this project.
Information was gathered through consultation with staff from the Specialist AAC Assessment centres and MND Care Centres, local SLTs and other professionals, people with MND who use AAC, the main companies who supply the equipment and the equipment loans team at the MND association.
As a result of the project, an MND AAC Care Pathway has been developed to guide the decision making process of the equipment loans team and to give a framework for people with MND and professionals around AAC provision particularly in relation to assessment, training and funding applications.
The MND association are planning to use the project outcomes and Pathway to establish a more robust process around assessment for AAC and equipment provision. They are looking to develop partnership working with the Regional Assessment Centres to support ongoing training of SLTs. They are also looking to develop partnership agreements with the AAC companies.
