Summary

This project aimed to develop a web resource for NHS Education for Scotland. People with a range of communication support needs, including high-tech AAC, had a central role in the development of these resources.

Method/Activities/Techniques

Three workshops were held and sixteen people with a range of communication disabilities and conditions attended.

Results/Findings

Through these workshops key themes were identified and shaped into ten visioning statements as to what people with communication support needs wanted from health service staff. Enabling staff to hear the impact of not addressing these statements, from the perspective of someone with communication support needs, seemed a key way to challenge practice.

It was agreed that the project should create short video clips that would link personal experience and stories to the ten statements. These would form the cornerstone of a web resource that will be held on the NHS Education for Scotland website. A scoping exercise of existing internet resources was also carried out to point health staff to support that they could readily and freely access, to help them develop and improve practice.

Conclusions

This presentation will demonstrate the resources, discuss the learning that occurred through the project and highlight the next steps.
