Summary

The paper will provide an introduction to iPad and Android app development for therapists, teaching staff, AAC users and their families who are not programmers but who may have ideas for an app. It aims to give a non-technical audience sufficient overview of the issues and decisions which must be considered, to allow them to discuss ideas for apps with programmers.

Method/Activities/Techniques

The presenters have explored a number of different methods of creating apps for Android and iOS devices and have compared the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Results/Findings

Several different development methodologies exist and choosing the right one will depend on the target market for the app to be created, the required functionality of the app and the skills available for development.

Conclusions

App development is a rewarding and exciting area for both non-technical people and experienced developers to be involved in. By knowing some key information and terminology, non-technical people can communicate with programmers and be more fully involved in the development process.
