Summary

To share the experiences of setting up a group for younger adults who have been AAC users since childhood; consider what went well and less well in the set-up and facilitation of the group and also participation in the group; reflections from health professionals and group members; and thoughts about the future direction of the group.

Method/Activities/Techniques

We selected potential group members from the existing caseload and invited them to the group. We supported group members to take ownership of the group and develop it. Reflective feedback during the group was part of the process.

Results/Findings

There has been a good turnout; members are beginning to make links with each other outside the group via social media; and they are all keen to meet up again.

Conclusions

Support required to start getting ideas for the group flowing; a focus on developing autonomy and confidence is necessary.
