Summary

This presentation will provide strategies to promote language, communication, and literacy skills of children with complex communication needs. Participants will learn ways to increase student participation in class and other environments using core vocabulary. Stages of language development will be discussed from using one word at a time to expanding sentences using grammar rules. A variety of teaching materials and resources addressing these stages will be shared. Session content will focus on high-tech communication systems, however strategies may be applied to low-tech aids.

Method/Activities/Techniques

The teaching, modeling, and use of core vocabulary throughout the day using the descriptive teaching method allowed children to participate in educational curriculum utilising pre-existing class routines and lessons. Activities were chronologically age appropriate, occured withing natural environments, were of interest (motivating, engaging) to the students, and were sustainable over multiple exchanges.

Results/Findings

Participation and frequency of use of AAC has increased. Staff were able to provide more opportunities for students to communicate.

Conclusions

Will continue working with students and determine conclusions.
